ITEM: Napoleon's Hanger
The Faussaire is the only survivor of a set of twelve coat hangers
commisioned by the 14th Duke of Navarre to celebrate the marriage
of his daughter, Celestine, to the elderly Phillipe Cortes. Following
the demise of Cortes the day before the wedding, the set was split
up, and disappeared, until four were presented to Napoleon Bonaparte
whilst in exile on St Helena. After Bonaparte's death, the hangers
passed to his faithful retainer, Henri Le Camp, but three were
destroyed when Le Camp's house caught fire. The present example
survived thanks to Le Camp's heroism, rushing into the inferno
to rescue the precious hangers, an attempt that was to cost him
his life.
