ITEM: Oil Painting by Serial
Killer John Wayne Gacy
John Wayne Gacy tortured and killed at least 33 boys and men and
buried their bodies under the floorboards of his home. Gacy turned
to art during his decade on death row, turning out paintings of
witches, skulls, clowns, Jesus, monsters, Disney characters, and
birds. As a National Enquirer headline had it, "Mass Murderer
Paints Pictures in Prison — & Warped Art Collectors
Buy His Junk!"
I bought this painting, "Hi Ho in the Mine," from Gacy
for $69 in 1990. Gacy was executed by lethal injection on May
10, 1994. Four days later, 40 Gacy artworks were auctioned, selling
for as much as $800. Among the buyers was Chicago businessman
Joe Roth, who said he bought $20,000 worth of Gacy's paintings
to destroy them.
